The month of May began with the BJP demanding action against the water mafia in Mumbai under the Maharashatra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). On the 10th of May Atikh Khan, Rafiq Khan and Javed, all three ragpickers, were charged with MCOCA for allegedly causing fire in the dumping ground at Deonar Mumbai. In the early hours of 18th March 2016, Mohammad Majloom Ansari (35) and Inayahtullah Khan (12) were found hanging from a tree in the Balumath forest area in Latehar, Jharkhand. Residents of Balugoan and Nawada villages, Ansari and young Khan were on their way to the weekly cattle fair with their eight buffaloes when they were stopped, thrashed, strangled and hanged by a lynch mob. So far the police has arrested 5 men and is on the lookout for three others. It has also clamped S.144 IPC in Balumath in a bid to quell communal tensions.

2013 में मुज़फ्फरनगर में हुऐ दंगों से सम्बंधित हत्याओं, बलात्कार, लूट और आगज़नी के मामलों में आरोपियों के बरी होने की खबरें लगातार सामने आ रही हैं | पीयूडीआर चिंता व्यक्त करता है कि 2013 में मुज़फ्फरनगर के दंगों के बाद डर और खुली छूट का जो माहौल बना था, वह आज भी बरकरार है | आरोपियों द्वारा गवाहों को डरा-धमका कर चुप कराया जा रहा है | पीयूडीआर उत्तर प्रदेश पुलिस और प्रशासन की जांच में जान-बूझकर की जा रही ढील और लोगों को सुरक्षित महसूस कराने में उनकी नाकामयाबी की निंदा करता है | साथ ही पीयूडीआर न्यायालयों की भी निंदा करता है जो लगातार पक्षपातपूर्ण फैसले सुना रहे हैं |

PUDR strongly condemns the police’s role in the outbreak of riots between members of the Valmiki and  Muslim communities, in the Sangam Park area in North West Delhi, on 31st January, 2016.  PUDR’s investigation into the incidents of 30th and 31st January, and meetings with residents and the police on 31st January and 1st February clearly establish the police’s culpability.

The threat of a two pronged attack on life and liberty of the citizens, as well as visiting foreigners, posed by a party in power never appeared as imminent as it does today. There is an exponential rise in the assault on our democratic rights launched by the Hindtuva forces, and the institutions of the State, from police to intelligence and civil administration. The right wing bigots feel empowered under Narendra Modi led Central Government, is a palpable truism of our times.
