Dead Wrong: Why was DhananjoyChatterjee Hanged?is a report which questions the judicial decision to hang Dhananjoy Chatterjee on 14th August 2004 in Kolkata’s Alipore Correctional Home. Chatterjee, a security guard, was awarded death penalty for the rape and murder of an 18 year old girl, Hetal Parekh, in March 1990 in her apartment in Bhowanipore, Kolkata.

On 27th January 2015, the Allahbad High Court will decide whether Surender Koli will live or die as it will hear a petition asking for commutation of his death penalty on grounds of delay. Koli, the dalit manservant of Moninder Pandher, was charged of heinous crimes in the Nithari serial murders and disappearances.

The Nithari case made headlines in 2006 when fifteen skeletons were unearthed from a house in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, following the investigation in the disappearance case in which a number of children and a woman went missing. House owner Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic servant Surender Koli were arrested in the case and both were accused of serial murders, sexual abuse and cannibalism (eating human body parts).

PUDR’s opposition to the penalty of death is three decades old. Like everything else our opposition on capital punishment is evolving and is a ‘work in progress’. Starting with serious objections to the arbitrariness inbuilt in awarding Death Penalty, the fact that almost all death row convicts have come from lower echelons of society convinced us of its unjustness and that in an unequal society even dispensation of justice is stacked against the poor.

ON FRIDAY, 22 DECEMBER 2000, at about 9 p.m., a firing incident took place inside the Red Fort at Delhi which housed, since 1857 and until recently, an Army garrison. Three Army personnel of the 7th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, died in the attack. While those who perpetrated the crime escaped, subsequent investigation conducted by the police led to an alleged Lashkar-e-Tayeba (LeT) militant Md. Ashfaq, who was arrested on late night of 25th December along with his wife Rehmana.
