PUDR strongly condemns the violence unleashed by right-wing hoodlums inside Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on the evening of 5 January 2019. A group of around 100 masked goons carrying rods, hammers, canes/lathis among other weapons barged into the closed campus in the evening and violently assaulted students and professors. Doctors at AIIMS Trauma Centre have confirmed to PUDR that thirty-four students with injuries caused by sharp/blunt weapons were treated. The JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh also received severe injuries on the head.

People’s Union for Democratic Rights condemns the attempts being made by the Uttar Pradesh government towards securing a national level ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) and also trying to contemptuously target rights-based organization Rihai Manch through accusations of them having planned and instigated violence in the wake of mass anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protests in the state.

5th November 2019 marks the 3-month lockdown of Jammu and Kashmir after the BJP government abrogated the special status of the state under Article 370 and 35A. The BJP government at the centre is projecting the transition into the new set up as absolute “normalcy”. Fact findings conducted by various civil society groups point to a terrifying situation.

At the stroke of the midnight hour on 5 August 2019, Jammu and Kashmir was blanketed in a state of siege. 35,000 fresh troops in addition to the existing 6.5 lakhs were present with orders to shoot, curfew, internet and phone shut down, media black out, and all major elected leaders under house arrest. Already, there was escalated aggression over the past week, with reports of military takeover of state institutions and frenzied evacuation of tourists and Amarnath yatris.
