PUDR mourns the death of Dr Brahma Dev Sharma, one among the rare breed of civil servants who, in service as well as on retirement, continued to stand by the marginalised and the oppressed. His lifelong service of championing the rights of the Adivasis has stood the test of time. From when he was the District Collector of undivided Bastar (1969-71), he blocked the expansion of Bailadilla Mines, heeding the appeal of the Adivasis that iron ore mining was ruining their lives and destroying their habitat.
Peoples Union for Democratic Rights is alarmed at the manner in which the Bastar Bar Association in tandem with the police is creating legal hurdles for the Jagdalpur Legal Aid Group from providing representation to local Adivasis who are harassed as Naxal offenders. Playing on a technicality of “outside” lawyers, the Bar Association passed a diktat on 3rd October against JAGLAG lawyers on the grounds that they are not registered in Chhattisgarh. The Dantewada District Bar Association followed suit and attempted to pass a similar resolution.
PUDR condemns the ongoing attacks by the state police and land mafia against the protesters who have been agitating against the construction of the Kanhar Dam project in Sonbhadra district for the past seven months. The arrest of Roma Malik, Sukalo (30th June), Gambheera Prasad (21st April), Pankaj, Laxman and Ashrafi Yadav (14th April) of the All India Union of Forest Working People (AIUFWP) is the latest demonstration of such terror tactics.
CDRO (Coordination of Democratic Rights Organizations) unequivocally condemns the judgement of the Midnapore (West Bengal) district and sessions court on 12th May, 2015, convicting Chatradhar Mahato, spokesperson of the Peoples Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) of Lalgarh, along with Sukhshanti Baske, treasurer of the PCPA, Sambhu Soren and Sagun Murmu, members of PCPA and Raja (Tinku) Sarkhel and Prasun Chattopadhyay, members of Gana Pratirodh Manch for sedition and waging war against the state.
PUDR strongly condemns the decision of the Midnapore District Court to award life-sentences to Chhatradhar Mahato, Sukhsanti Baske, Shambhu Soren,Sagun Murmu, Raja Sarkhel and Prasun Chatterjee. All six were arrested between September and October 2009 from Lalgarh and Kolkata on charges of being Maoists and for backing a Maoist front organization, People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) and charged under sections of the UAPA, Arms Act, Explosives Substances Act and IPC.
CDRO (Coordination of Democratic Rights Organizations) expresses deep concern over recent reports regarding the re-launching of the notorious state-sponsored anti-Maoist militia, the Salwa Judum, from 25th May 2015. While inaugurating the Vikas Sangharsh Samiti in Dantewada on 5th May, the new leader, Chhavindra Kumar, announced that the main aim of the Samiti will be to “finish the Maoists in Bastar”. Pertinently, this announcement comes ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to the state with suggested plans of signing two significant MOUs valued at Rs.
PUDR strongly condemns IG Bastar, SRP Kalluri’s threat of taking severe action against certain NGOs in Chhattisgarh for allegedly aiding and abetting the Maoists under the guise of helping Adivasis. At a recent Press Conference he said that many such organisations were already under surveillance.
