It is relatively easy to document the exploitation and oppression that women in our country, particularly women of the labouring classes, are subjected to outside the home. But it is a very difficult task to attempt to document their condition within the home. The reason is that here the oppression is “invisible” for the most part; it takes place within the four walls of the home, and what is more, it is treated as a “family,” a “private” matter. Violation of their basic rights to life, liberty, dissent, and human dignity, even when it takes place within the family, even when such violation has a social sanction, nevertheless becomes a matter of concern for the democratic rights movement. Hence this PUDR report on the democratic rights of women in the family.
