CDRO expresses deep concern about the intensifying repression on the Dongria Kondhos of Niyamgiri mountains whose sustained resistance against bauxite mining is a fight for their survival and livelihood. CDRO condemns the midnight raid of the CRPF on the night of May 1, 2017 and the illegal and arbitrary manner in which 20-year old Kuni Sikaka was forcibly taken to the police station in the absence of women police personnel, leave alone any warrant. The next 36 hours were the most torturous for her and activists of Niyamgiri Suraksha Samiti(NSS),who followed her to the police station.
The Maoist attack of 24th April in Burkapal village in Sukma District which left 25 CRPF jawans and at least one Maoist dead is the latest instance in the cycle of violence and counter-violence between the security forces and the Maoists in Chhattisgarh, which has resulted in a regrettable loss of lives over the years. The incident has understandably generated a great deal of anger and sorrow, as well as the expected political jingoism. The rumours that began circulating in the media added to the frenzy, hiding the real issues.
Peoples Union for Democratic Rights finds the two notices and a warning issued to SRP Kalluri, and the transfer of SP Sukma, I.K. Elsela and RN Das SP Bastar as falling far short of their crime as officers of Law. The two notices apart from reprimanding them for attending a private function and making statements against the social media policy of the government, does not have anything for the threats advocated by them against citizens.

Subject: Seeking immediate intervention into the arrest of activists of the Telangana Democratic Front on false charges and other attacks on rights defenders by police and vigilante groups in Chhattisgarh
Honourable Sir,
PUDR strongly condemns the intimidation of Shalini Gera, an advocate and member of Jagdalpur Legal Aid Group (JAG LAG) by the Chhattisgarh police. On 27th December 2016, she received a phone call from Mr. RN Dash SP Bastar, informing her that he has received a written complaint stating that she has exchanged notes worth Rs. 10 lakhs for Naxalites in the Goel Dharamshala in Jagdalpur on Monday, December 26, 2016. She was also accused of meeting Naxalites in Dantewada jungles.
CDRO strongly condemns the arrest of a 7 member Fact Finding team by the Telangana police at Dummagudem village of Bhadrachalam district on 25th December, 2016 at 6 pm and in turn handing them over to the Sukma Police (Chhattisgarh State). We also strongly object to the way Sukma Police foisted false cases against the Fact Finding team members under Sections 8(1),(2) (3)and (5) of the Chhattisgarh State Public Security Act.
PUDR expresses its disquiet that Bastar Police has recorded an FIR on the basis of a complaint filed by wife of deceased Shamnath Baghel, of Nama village under Kumakoleng Gram Panchayat in Tongpal who was killed, on November 4th allegedly by the Maoists.
In the backdrop of the history of mass killings in rural Bihar over the two decades of the 1980s and the 1990s, and the fact finding missions conducted by PUDR, we bring out a report on the Bara massacre that happened on 12th February 1992 at village Bara in the Gaya district of Bihar.
