PUDR strongly condemns the custodial torture of young dalit labour activist Shiv Kumar working in the Kundli Industrial Area by Haryana police. Shiv Kumar was arrested under 3 FIRs (no. 649 of 28/12/20 and nos. 25 and 26 of 12/1/21, Kundli PS) against workers who were protesting to demand their pending wages in Kundli Industrial Area, Haryana.

PUDR strongly condemns the arrest of Bengaluru based Disha Ravi, a twenty-two-year-old environmental and climate change activist on 13th February in the ‘toolkit’ conspiracy case for which she has been charged with sedition, criminal conspiracy and for promoting hatred. She was produced before a Metropolitan Magistrate in Patiala House on Sunday, 14th February and remanded to five days of police custody.

In a blatantly repressive move aimed at foiling public protest at Shaheedi Park at noon today in support of the countrywide chakka jam called by the Kisan Unions, the Delhi police has prevented the movements of left union leaders and taken some into preventive custody since late last night and early morning.

People’s Union for Democratic Rights strongly condemns the continued incarceration and denial of bail to Munawar Faruqui who was arrested on 2 January, 2021 and five others in Indore. Based on the claim of a vigilante group Hind Rakshak Sangathan (HRS), Faruqui and others have been accused of hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindu community and for uttering jokes about the sitting Home Minister through a case registered at Tukoganj police station, Indore under Sections 295A, 298, 269, 188 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

PUDR condemns the Haryana Government and the Police for filing cases against farmers protesting against the three farmers and Electricity Act.  As per various news reports, Haryana Police have registered cases at Sadar Ambala PS, Baldev Nagar Ambala PS and Dabwali PS against Bhartiya Kisan Union and other farmers' organizations for allegedly breaking police checkpoints and entering Haryana during the 'Delhi chalo' campaign.

On November 17, 2018, Dr P Varavara Rao was taken into custody for his alleged role in the Elgar Parishad Case, after spending 79 days under house arrest. So far he has spent 732 days in jail. The trial has not started.

This year marks the 36th anniversary of the genocide of Sikhs in Delhi which began on 31 October and went on till 4 November. The genocide spread to 40 cities. Official figures state that 2700 were killed in Delhi. Unofficial estimates state that the total number of deaths across India were closer to 10,000. The number of those convicted has been very low, and the process of getting justice tortuous.
