PUDR conducted a fact-finding to probe into the incident of mass termination in a mobile phone manufacturing unit in Noida, Uttar Pradesh where around 180 workers were thrown out of job without any prior notice on 29th November 2018. The abysmal and appalling nature of employment being generated under the 2015 ‘Make in India’ drive becomes starkly visible in this manufacturing unit called Hipad Technology India Private Limited situated in Noida Sector 63, making phones for Chinese companies Oppo and Xiaomi.

This is PUDR's position paper presented during the 33rd Ramandham Memorial meeting on 8th Sep 2018. The paper is based on some of the investigations carried by PUDR over the years related to globally intergrated industries in the region - such as automobile industry at Manesar (Haryana), consumer electronics such as LG and Vivo phones (Greater Noida), garment workers in Kapashera (Delhi); as well as local industries, such as workers in localised factories in Bawan aand also workers engaged by the government in PWD.

This report covers the investigation carried out by PUDR team in to the massive fire that broke out in a factory in Delhi’s Bawana Industrial area. Altogether 17 workers, including 10 women had lost their life and 30 workers had suffered burn and other injuries.  The factory was registered as a plastic factory but was storing and packaging firecrackers. Apart from investigating the accident, the report also covers the working condition in Bawana Industrial Area. This brief report brings to life the precariousness of workers lives in the national capital Delhi.

18 मार्च 2017 को हरियाणा में गुरुग्राम सेशंस कोर्ट ने मारूति कंपनी के 31 बर्खास्त कामगारों को सज़ा सुनाई, जिनमें से 13 मजदूरों को उम्र कैद की सज़ा सुनाई गई। इन सभी को अदालत ने हफ्ते भर पहले 10 मार्च 2017 को दोषी करार दिया था। अतिरिक्त सेशंस जज आर.पी. गोयल ने 117 कामगारों को बरी कर दिया। इन सभी को 5 साल पहले गिरफ्तार किया गया था और 2 से 4 साल तक जेल में रखा गया था। जिन 13 कामगारों को सबसे कड़ी सज़ा दी गई है वे मारूति यूनियन के सक्रिय सदस्य और पदाधिकारी थे।

मानेसर, हरियाणा का इन्डस्ट्रियल माडल टाउनशिप (आई.एम.टी.) दिल्ली-एन.सी.आर. का जाना माना औद्योगिक क्षेत्र है। औद्योगिक क्षेत्र होने के अलावा, यह क्षेत्र मारुती प्लान्ट के कारण भी मशहूर है। मारुती के मजदूरों का संघर्ष भी प्रचलित रहा है, और यह भी जानी हुई बात है कि हाल में ट्रायल कोर्ट ने 13 मजदूरों को आजीवन कारावास की सजा सुनाई थी। मारुती कम्पनी के अलावा, इस इलाके में मारुती जैसी ऑटोमोबाइल कम्पनियों के लिये पुर्जा बनाने वाली भी कई कम्पनियाँ कार्यरत हैं। ऐसी ही एक कम्पनी एस.पी.एम. ऑटोकॉम्प प्राईवेट लिमिटेड है। एस.पी.एम. तथा मारुती का रिश्ता यहीं तक सीमित नहीं है। एस.पी.एम.

Industrial Model Township (IMT) in Manesar, Haryana is known, not only as an industrial belt in the National Capital Region (NCR) but also as the home to the Maruti plant and the struggle by its workers. It is well known that 13 active union members of Maruti's Manesar plant have been given life imprisonment by the trial court recently. Workers in this unit managed to get their union registered in January 2012 after months of very hard struggle.

Most important of these rights is the fundamental right to form trade union, so as to engage in collective wage negotiations and to ensure that conditions on shop floor do not become tyrannical.
